Additional Test requested without consent
I did a papsmear at Century City offices with Dr. Merrington on the 31st December. I am on Discovery Coastal Core plan which covers papsmear tests.

I was shocked to find out that additional to the basic papsmear test an HPV typing test was done which costs R846. Discovery said this is not normal procedure when a wellness provider does a papsmear test. This is considered an additional test which the medical aid does not cover.

The doctor did not in anyway explain that she was requesting both a cytology and HPV test as I have never had problems when going for a papsmear in the past. They have always only requested one test.

I am of the opinion that Intercare should be held liable for this payment as I did not request this additional test nor was I made aware of it. Mrs. Swartzkopff, Practice Manager feels that the doctor or practice is not in the wrong and that it differs from doctor to doctor as to what they request.

Is it not basic skills to teach your doctors to inform clients what they are requesting to be tested?!

This is not acceptable to me and I will take the matter further if need be.
