Nonchalant

We purchased a 2013 Hyundai Elantra 1.6 GLS Premium with 50,500KM from Imperial Select Polokwane in August 2015 and within the first week I heard a slight whining noise so we took the vehicle in to the service centre for them to inspect. Their response was that they found nothing wrong but replaced the rear brake pads.

When I did drive the vehicle, my wife drives it most of the time, I still heard this whining noise but the service centre said there wasn't anything wrong so I took it that this is how the vehicle I supposed to sound.

Time went on and this whining noise slowly got louder so the other day when I was driving it, I decided to take it in to the service centre again but this time requested that a mechanic drive along with me in order for me to explain exatly what I meant. The mechanic agreed that the sound shouldn't be there and proceeded to have the admin lady book the vehicle in for the following week. It could be a bearing within the differential he said.

We took the vehicle in on 7 September 2016 and were called to collect that afternoon with their response that they have logged it with the hotline, not much more detail than that.

I waited a week and the following Wednesday, 14 September 2016, I returned to enquire on the progress with which they responded that they were still awaiting feedback from the hotline.

I returned the next day 15 September 2016 and received the same answer again - hotline.

My wife and I returned again on Friday 16 September 2016 and were told that Gordin (I believe) would talk to us. He had the same answer about the hotline and went on to explain that it seems the gearbox needs to be replaced but needed to confirm who is going to pay for it as he (or whoever he represents) would like to avoid paying for it.

I then thought about it a bit after leaving and decided to call Hyundai directly (Friday 16 September 2016) to enquire on the warranty period. I spoke to Sibo and he confirmed that the warranty is 5 years or 150,000KM, we are within the warranty so I don’t know why there’s a problem if the manufacturer covers it?

Sibo said he will have their service manager contact me the same day (Friday 16 September 2016) or Monday 19 September 2016 at the latest. I received no such call even though I called around 16h30 and was informed that Sibo was on a call and that he would call me back after he was finished with his current call. I didn't receive such a call.

My mother drove Hyundai for a couple of years and didn’t have issues as far as I can recall, this was part of the decision factor for us buying the brand. We had a Hyundai Getz before this vehicle and it was fine, though Imperial Select Polokwane did sell it to use with a broken engine mounting (an engine mounting was broken according to the service centre). It seems to be a common trait of Imperial Select Polokwane, we now have a damaged gearbox but nobody seems to care or want to assist us in resolving it.

I have lost my respect for Imperial Select and Hyundai and at this point highly doubt I will be buying from either again, I was keen on the Sonata next but I don’t think I’ll be doing so anymore. I will also advise my friends, family, colleagues, clients and acquaintances about my experience.

It is very easy for the saleman to sell you a vehicle and the finance department recommend all the bells and whistles on what you're "covered" for but it is very disheartening to work hard for 11 years to eventually be able to purchase, what I thought, a decent vehicle and then sit with this situation. Furthermore it is a constant worry that my pregnant wife and unborn son may be left stranded on the side of the road alone, subjected to harrasment or abuse or worse!

I'm posting this to Imperial Select and Hyundai so in case both of you miraculously react, the reference I got from Sibo is IN ********** ********** 912914.

Delivered the vehicle to Hyundai Polokwane last week Wednesday 28 September 2016 as requested, received the vehicle back today still with the same problem. I don't know what they supposedly did but it seems nothing happened other than wasting my time and giving false hope. Very dissatisfied and frustrated.
