Unauthorised cancelation of my vehicle insurance

When I purchased my vehicle via IEMAS Vehicle Finance in 2015, I was referred to IEMAS Vehicle Insurance by the Sales Consultant who was assisting me.

I had been a long standing customer of IEMAS for almost a year now and would never have expected them to be unprofessional as I have recently experienced.

Unfortunately, due to being hospitalised I resigned from work and I was not paid a salary in June as my previous company deducted the sick leave and I only served 2 weeks’ notice.

When I found new employment on June the 20th, I was contacted by Mariah Mohale of Central Collections Department regarding a form I needed to fill out since my Vehicle Finance Installment will no longer go off from my payslip. I filled out the forms and for continued membership and e-mailed together with my appointment letter as requested.

Mariah also requested proof of Vehicle Insurance. I contacted IEMAS Vehicle Insurance on 25 July and I was informed that my Vehicle Insurance has been cancelled due to unmet premiums. I made arrangements for my unmet premiums to be deducted from my bank account next pay date, unfortunately the debit orders went off when I had insufficient funds in my bank account and my Vehicle Insurance remained cancelled (so I found out).

I requested the reason why the cancellation of my Vehicle Insurance was never communicated to me as I was willing to pay for those unmet premiums. On Friday, 23 September, I sent an e-mail to check the status of my Vehicle Insurance, I did not get a response. I called IEMAS on 26 September at 09:55 and I was informed that in order for me to reinstate my Vehicle Insurance I need to pay an amount of R4940.22.

After that my e-mail was responded to saying my Vehicle Insurance has been cancelled due to unmet premiums. I paid that R4940.22 and e-mailed proof of payment to ********** as requested. I was then called by Thabo Keetse, Short Term Insurance Underwriting Consultant informing me that I sent an e-mail informing them that I have a pending and current claim.

I told him that the reference number for that claim is in my car which is currently at I-Tech since I had a car accident on Friday, 23 September. Thabo told me that in order for me to reinstate my Vehicle Insurance I must pay +-R8000 and even after paying IEMAS is not going to entertain my pending and current claims as I was not covered at the time. Now my question is why was I informed to pay R4940.22 before and now that I want to follow-up on my pending claim or send through my current claim I am being told I need to pay +-R8000 in order for my Vehicle Insurance to be reinstated and my car accident claim will still not be entertained. IEMAS “my caring partner?” REALLY?

Firstly, IEMAS should not have cancelled my Vehicle Insurance without my consent.

Secondly, the first amount I paid is the only amount I am willing and can afford to pay as that is the amount I was initially told to pay. My account is now up to date and IEMAS will not entertain my claims? That is day light *******, I could have used that money to add to the amount I am going to need to repair my vehicle since my "caring partner" will not entertain my car accident claim. I am still not covered, my vehicle is still not repaired and I was ****** R4940.22 by IEMAS. I am in a very hopeless sistuation and I wish to warn other clients who might find themselves in a similar situation in future.

I am very disappointed in this uncaring and unprofessional manner IEMAS handled my request. VERY *****ULANT AND UNFAIR!
