Terrible Service - Hyundai

My husband & I purchased a 2014 Hyundai i20 motion (just over 29km on the clock) towards the end of February 2016 from their Hyundai Harbour View dealership. When we were being pitched for the vehicle we were told that we would get a tracker installed with the vehicle which we would only pay for after three years, this later changed when we had to sign for the car & were then told that this would be included in the instalments. We were also informed that the car came with & alarm, all the information we relayed to our insurance company, we later came to find out after going back & forth that the vehicle did not have an alarm, only an immobilizer. We were told that we could bring the car back to be serviced because it was nearing 30k & had been a while since the last service according to the service book.

Upon the conclusion of the deal, the dealership was to settle my trade in with the bank which eventually took several weeks to finalize resulting in the settlement value changing & me subsequently being debited for the vehicle which I had already given in to them & was driving the new vehicle. After going back & forth & waiting another few weeks I finally received my instalment back from the dealership.

Sometime in March we noticed that the car did not quite seem up to standard & picked up that the right fender was not aligned with the door. We then requested the AA certificate which was not initially given to us. After numerous emails & calls we finally received the so called certificate which was very unclear & had very little information to the actual vehicle, the mileage noted on the piece of paper did not correspond to the vehicle which we had & in addition did not correspond to the service book, the dealership shrugged us off & told us this was merely a typing error & also did not serve as any significance to our car or deal, we were also told that there would be no service of the car which we were assured we could have in the beginning.

Over the month we began to notice more issues with the vehicle. The window made noises when being reeled up or down, there was a small spot of rust on the roof, the rubber beading on the frames were coming off, there was a noise coming from the car when driving, the driver seat was loose & the passenger seat was broken underneath. We contacted our legal aid which advised us of the 6 month period in which the dealership has to resolve any issues we pick & so we contacted the dealership who asked us to bring the car in to view & arrange a date to take it into the workshop. After meeting with the salesman we received no feedback, when we made inquiries again we experienced many delays – they were trying to arrange a curtesy vehicle which seemed difficult to do, they were looking for a dealership closer to us to assist, ten finally waiting for the manager to return.

We eventually grew frustrated as we received no feedback & no response to email & had to resort to threatening with legal action which seemed to only yield a swift response, they car was to be booked in a few days later & we sent an email with all the issues on the vehicle which had to be sorted as well as another request for a proper AA Certificate as the one given before was an inspection document not a certificate – the salesman told us that we should have told the document was incorrect before as he would not know & yet we did inform them that we were not happy with the document back in March – also this is a car dealership, should they not know what an AA certificate is?

From what was supposed to be a week max turned into a couple if not more, we were told that the passenger seat had to be replaced which would need to be imported & the car needed painting which would take longer to set, so we waited, having to see to our own transport. When we eventually went to collect the car the salesman was not there, the car was two different shades of white & the indicator light falling out & the manager advised us to leave the car which we obviously had to do given the state of things. After another week we went to pick up the car once again. The paint work seemed fixed & we test drove the car to find it was still making noise. The manager informed us at first that this was normal for these cars which I argued, he eventually came to the conclusion that the tyres were of poor quality & offered to have them replaced, they gave us a new AA Certificate which was actually a vehicle inspection document, we asked again for the first certificate & to date still have not received it. The car was picked up from my workplace & later returned, I was told all four tyres were replaced and wheel alignment was done.

To date the car still makes a noise & we have been told that they cannot assist us any further. We also took the car to the panel beaters to be looked at, there is residue left behind from the car being repainted, more rust in other unseen places. The passenger seat which was supposed to be replaced clicks when the car is in motion, the rubbing beading is still coming off, the back seat has a gap between the seats & a part is missing & as per the workshop @ Hyundai the “NEW” tyres are still warped. The car also pulls to the right when driving despite just having wheel alignment. We have been in contact with this dealership to date trying to get some relief to this nightmare as it seems highly unfair that we should pay for this car, however to no avail. We are now awaiting feedback from the ombudsman.

I think this is by far the worst customer service we have ever experienced despite all the promises & values Hyundai is supposed to stand for, in fact for the most part it is been brushed off lightly because the car is pre-owned – were does quality fit into the equation & for a vehicle with 29k it should not have this many issues. They are now trying to work on trading in this car & offering me a car at R1000 more than what I am paying in monthly instalments to “so as to avoid these issues” does that mean every car being sold by Hyundai prior to 2015 will be problematic & we should expect this poor quality? Am I getting my monies worth? Should this dealership profit from their negligence at my expense? This does not seem fair to me.

Very bad service Hyundai, I am very appalled & look forward to the day I will never have to deal with this company again. Last vehicle I ever buy from Hyundai! I do not encourage anyone else to either.
