Hyundai SanteFe - Hyundai South Africa - NO SERVICE!!

I am sad to say this but I am a rather dissatisfied and totally unsatisficed client.

I purchased my Hyundai Santa Fe from Roodepoort. It currently has just over 50000km on the clock, been for every service to-date and now I sit with a problem car. This vehicle is still under warranty and has a full maintenance contract!

On the 11th December 2016 my kids and I travelled down to Cape Town for our festive season break. 30km outside Lainsburg the car suddenly lost power so I pulled over. Once I pulled over I saw smoke coming out of the engine, no alarm light on the dash board came on nor alarmed me. This is 30km on the freeway with no one in sight with two minor kids in the car with minimal signal as well. I opened up the bonnet let it cool down and checked water but all seemed in order. I let it cool down for a couple of minutes and then attempted to restarted the vehicle. All was normal on the dash board no alarm lights came on and temperature was normal. I put the kids back into the car, closed everything up and continued at 80km on the highway to the next 1stop which was in Laingsburg. In the interim I had to contact someone who had to come and assist us but he was hours away and we would be stranded...

When I stopped there. I asked the petrol tenant to please check my oil and water and before he could even open the bonnet he shouted to me to turn the vehicle off. I then got out to find oil pouring out on the driveway under the car. They were kind enough to call a local mechanic out to come and give me an opinion on what was wrong and to assist the kids and I to get on our way before dark. When he arrived he asked me whether the car was still under warranty etc. and said he can look and advise but could not assist as Hyundai would had to as it was still under warranty. At this stage I was beside myself as I was on my own with my 2 kids sitting on a pavement. He briefly took a look and said it looked like the gearbox. I then commenced to contact Roadside assist. I spoke to a consultant by the name of Bongani who assisted me in advising me that Hyundai will refund accommodation for 1 night and that he would get a tow truck to collect my vehicle from me at the service station in 1 hour. From there the vehicle would be taken to Hyundai Worcester the following day as it was a Sunday that I broke down and Hyundai would only open on Monday morning. The tow truck arrived and collected my vehicle. I was then informed that I would be collected from our accommodation point in the morning to be taken to Worcester along with my vehicle.

The kids and I then booked into the overnight accommodation that cost me R 880.00 which was all we could find at this time and that was available. When we arrived in Worcester on Monday morning I was told that they would take a look at it for me. They were busy so we had to hang around in the reception till they could get to it. Eventually at around 11h30 I commenced to the workshop to try and find out what I should do. It was then brought to my attention that it was definitely the gearbox. With this I too was informed that they would have to send the gearbox to Mayfair Gearbox in Cape Town to be repaired. Once repaired it would be sent back to Worcester so tha they could assemble the vehicle and I could have my vehicle, but this would take a couple of days as it had to be sent away. Here I was stuck without a vehicle. I then asked what Hyundai was going to do about this as I needed to get to Langebaan. Hyundai Worcester then advised me that it was out of their hands and that I should hire a car or get someone to fetch us.

By this time I had had enough I hired a vehicle and got on my way. I then got called from Hyundai Worcester a few days later to advise me that the gearbox was collected and freighted to Mayfair Gearbox in Cape Town and that Mayfair Gearboxwere now waiting for parts to arrive. Once the parts arrived they would assemble and return to Hyundai Worcester but due to the holidays there would be even further delays. Here I sit with extra costs incurred due to unsatisfactory service levels from Hyundai. A brand new car, under warranty and full maintenance with these issues. My friend then took it upon himself to hire me a vehicle in order for us to get around.

Eventually on the 3rd of January 2017 (almost a month) I called to follow up on the status of the car to be told by Hyundai Worcester that Mayfair Gearbox had received the parts and that they were going to assemble the gearbox and return it to Hyundai Worcester. By now I had had enough and actually brought out my frustrations on Hyundai Worcester whom I then found out that they are and independent dealer and their hands were tied. They were doing their best to assist me where actually Hyundai SA should have handled this problem. THANK YOU HYUNDAI WORCESTER!! On the 5th of January 2017 the gearbox was received by Hyundai Worcester who were going to assemble the gearbox into the vehicle. Once assembled the vehicle was taken for a test drive and not even 15km into the test drive the gearbox blew again!!!

Thank goodness they test drove it and it happened then and not on my travels back to Gauteng with my kids in the car!!! Hyundai Worcester then advised me that the whole vehicle would have to be sent back to Mayfair Gearbox. This was rather concerning and alarming for me, a brand new vehicle, gearbox problems, under warranty, full maintenance and they actually attempting to repair. I have down some research and to my knowledge if under warranty the gearbox should be replaced.

I now needed to get my kids back to Gauteng couldn’t wait any longer. Juan de Villiers owner of Hyundai Worcester (independent dealer) then took it upon himself to assist me and the kids in loaning us a vehicle to get us back to Gauteng until my vehicle was returned. He now has to pick up these costs out of his own pocket too!!! I was then notified that my vehicle could take a further 1 – 2 weeks.

Well its now the 9th February 2017 and STILL I HAVE NOT RECEIVED MY CAR!! Mayfair Gearbox dont get back to Hyundai Worcester whom had to now log a complaint with the head of customer Car - Max.

This is totally ridiculous and not to mention unacceptable. Where on earth does it take a dealer 2 months to repair a vehicle?? This is totally unprofessional, unsettling and has huge warning bells attached to it.

Is this what we as consumers are spending our money on? Its ludicrous and I am now sick and tired of been treated like this.

I applaude Hyundai Worcester, Thank you Juan de Villiers to you and your team but as for the rest well there are no words. Sad to see that we as consumers in South Africa pay fortunes for reliable vehicles and great service but you never get it. I AM A SINGLE MOM with 2 kids WHO NEED MY CAR TO EARN A LIVING and have transport!!
