Faulty Hyundai i10 and horrible service from Hyundai Head Office
I bought a brand new car from a Hyundai branch in Cape Town in 2018. Not long after, the car started giving me problems. Firstly the gears got stuck and I had to be towed. The diagnosis back then, was that the material used at manufacturing stage was weak. They replaced a part in the gear knob, under warranty.
After that I started experiencing issues with the radio losing signal and not working. Then the car electronics would shut down while driving or at the robots. Wouldn't be able to start, open or close windows, let alone put on hazards. I had to be pushed off the road a few times because of this. Car would eventually start after trying for a few times or just waiting it out.
I have taken the car in various times to different branches. They check it and come back saying they did not find any problem. They've tested the battery and said it was fine. They did an electronic scan then found some error with sensors but advised it was cleared. Recently, I've been having to kick start the car every morning, up until 25/05/2020 when I got stranded and the car refused to kick start at all. Roadside assist came to jump start the car, tested the battery and found no fault with the actual battery, but advised that the battery is not getting enough power so they must check the alternator or charging system. I took the car in on 25/05/2020 and advised them of all of this.
Yesterday they gave me a diagnosis on the car. Apparently the battery has to be replaced. I asked them why because they have been testing the battery all along without finding fault, now all of a sudden it's the battery. Same battery that was tested on the 25th and no fault was found. Apparently the battery failed the load test and it won't hold. I don't know what that means. So now they're replacing the battery under warranty, even though I don't know what the actual issue is.
I decided to lay a formal complaint with the head office because I feel like all these branches are giving me a run around until the car is outside warranty. I asked that they replace the car as I've had too many issues. The mileage is only 28000km and I only drive it locally. I still can't believe the response I got. Basically, they will not replace the car as all these issues are unrelated and they have a right to repair. I get the right to repair part, but whose fault is it that the car has so many faults? Now I'm stuck with a faulty car that I must still pay, while they tell me about their right to repair. All they're offering to do is to do the same checks they've been doing all along. Test drive the car again, as they've been doing. Then come back to me with the same story. So I'm basically a crazy woman who has nothing to do with her time but go back and forth complaining about a non-existant problem.
Today, 27/05/2020 the branch where the vehicle is, advised me that the car is ready for collection and that the battery has been replaced. No mention of head office nor the tests that I was advised they would do. Basically, my complaint has been dismissed just like that. No news from head office today. I asked for a response in writing, after their call yesterday, no response as yet.
What a horrible experience. I'm so disappointed with Hyundai.
I just want to know if anyone has gone through a similar incident and if they went as far as the ombudsman route, as I feel like that's my only option right now.
