Absolutely poor service

On my Hyundai i30, my rear park sensors stopped working after 2 years of working fine. I thought I would wait until the next scheduled service to get it sorted out. When making the appointment for the next service, I informed Hyundai Pinetown that this was an issue. So they were aware of the problem before I sent the car in.

First visit to Hyundai Pinetown

They were unable to sort it out on the grounds that they did not have enough time.

Second visit to Hyundai Pinetown

They said it was either due to the tracker interfering, or it was the control unit. Before changing the R20 000 control unit they said I had to get the tracker disconnected.

Appointment with CTrack to get the tracker disconnected.

Third visit to Hyundai Pinetown

They said it clearly wasn’t the tracker. They now also said an auto electrician need to come sort it out, and there was no auto electrician available on that day. I needed to make another appointment, which could coincide with the auto electrician’s availability.

Fourth visit to Hyundai Pinetown

One of Hyundai’s technicians resolved the problem. They said it was a wiring issue with the PDC (Park Distance Control). After getting the car back, the light in the boot was missing, with wires hanging out of the space where the light should go. Also the grommets(plugs) that hold the boot sill plastic in place were not replaced. So another visit required. I waited for the next service which was nearly due.

Fifth visit to Hyundai Pinetown

This was a regular service where I informed them before hand of the missing boot light and grommets. I also went early to inform the service manager that it had taken 5 visits now to get the PDC’s working, which I found unacceptable, because if the problem was wiring, and it was resolved by a Hyundai technician, then it could have been done the first time it came in!

When I came to pick the car up, the boot light was replace, but it did not work. And the grommets had not been replaced either. The service advisor had not checked it, nor had the service manager (although it is not his job) even though this information was on the job card. I waited 20 minutes while the service manager scrambled to get it done.

On leaving Hyundai Pinetown, I noticed the handbrake was not working properly. I took the car to a nearby hill and sure enough the handbrake did not hold. I went back to Hyundai Pinetown immediately after leaving. Again, the service manager scrambled to get this sorted out.

After leaving for the second time, I tested the handbrake in the parking lot by pulling the handbrake up as far as it would go, and sure enough I could pull off, and change to second gear! Surely this is not right?! I went back a third time on the SAME DAY. Again the service manager scrambled to get it sorted out.

Since the day of that service (5 days later) I still have to park my car at home with car in gear because the hand brake does not hold. I have to now take back a FOURTH time to get the hand brake sorted.

Also, I have to make another appointment with CTrack for them to reconnect the tracker, which turned out to be unnecessary after all. All in all there have been SEVEN appointments with Hyundai Pinetown, ONE with CTrack, with at least ONE MORE appointment with Hyundai Pinetown (let’s hope it’s one more) and another ONE with CTrack.

As soon as I could, I went back to Hyundai Pinetown to complain to the Dealer Principal. I was told he was in a meeting for half an hour. After waiting for twenty minutes I went to check if the Dealer Principal was still in his meeting, and was then told that he was going out immediately after his meeting so I could not see him anyway!

I then went back to the service manager to express my frustration, and insisted they give me a car to use while I leave my car there. I did not want to take it back until the hand brake had been fixed properly. I was told all the courtesy cars were out, and there were no other cars to use. This despite a showroom full of second hand cars as well as demo cars? I was told the soonest a courtesy car would be available would be two days later. I then made an appointment for two days later. However, while walking out of Hyundai Pinetown and after so much run around, frustration and poor workmanship, I went back to cancel the appointment out of sheer frustration. They had said they could send a driver to pick up my car and give me a courtesy vehicle, but this would not fit in with my current work schedule, and they were not prepared to fit in with my work arrangements.

So, how much more frustration and inconvenience should I take? I specifically bought a new car so I would not have this kind of hassle. Not when paying R300 000 for a new car and extra maintenance plan.

After the second visit to get the rear park sensors sorted out, my wife reversed into a tree stump that she could not see from inside the car, and which the rear park sensors, had they been working, would not have hit. So now I also have had the hassle of getting quotations for this, and the added bonus of looking forward to taking my car to a panel beater.

Hyundai, what is going on with your service?! After the third visit to get the PDC’s fixed, I phoned Hyundai Pinetown to complain about the service I was receiving. I never got a call back from anyone. The next day the service receptionist of Hyundai Pinetown called to see how my experience with the repairs went, and I was quite clear that I was not happy. Still, I received no further response from anyone. A few days after that I received a survey phone call about my last visit. I was also quite clear on the problems and frustration I was having. I gave many low ratings. Still, no one responded about this survey.

Really Hyundai, what is the point of doing follow up calls and surveys if the feedback is not taken into account?

After the last visit to Hyundai Pinetown a sales person phoned to see if I wanted to upgrade my car. Disappointingly, I had to tell her that I don’t think I would buy another Hyundai based on the level of service I have received. I say “disappointingly” because it is not the car I am unhappy with. I realize that any mechanical or electrical systems may be prone to failure. But if an issue arises and it gets fixed, it is not a problem. It becomes a problem when one gets given the run around and frustration, when in fact it did not need to be the case. Could the wiring of the PDC’s not have been checked when the car went in for a service. The workshop was aware of the problem before the car went in. And surely, wiring would be the first thing to check on a fault like this.

And the fact that a handbrake does not work after the car has just been in for a service is ludicrous, and it still does not work after taking it in two more times!!!

And, after eventually getting the boot light working, I find stripped wiring and connectors in my boot afterwards. What is going on!

Hyundai, specifically Hyundai Pinetown, I hope you can resolve this issue with the hand brake on the next visit. Otherwise I may have to cause as much frustration and inconvenience you have caused me. I expect you to try and make up somehow for what I have had to endure. Not just an apology, and a shake of the service advisors hand while she says sorry after not doing her job.

Please, please, PLEASE don’t disappoint me again!
