Inconsistent collection of debit order, or is it trap for consumers to default on their policies?

I have a funeral policy with Hollard insurance. I make my monthly premium via debit orders, however to my surprise through being debited twice in Jan 2026, I realised my December premium was not collected.

This is unacceptable, debit orders provide service providers and consumers alike the assurance that the premium is collected in time. I do not have money for double payments. I do not know if this is a trap for consumers to default on their premiums. It’s suspicious and unacceptable

Hello Ntombizanele

Thank you for being patient and giving us the opportunity to resolve your complaint. Our complaints consultant informed us that your matter has been resolved.
We acknowledge your concern regarding the double debit order that occurred on 15 January 2026. Kindly note that the policy did not successfully receive the premium on 15 December 2025, as the debit order attempt was unsuccessful due to insufficient funds.
When a premium is not collected in the previous month, the system automatically recovers the outstanding amount during the next successful debit order run. As a result, a double premium was collected in January 2026 to bring the policy up to date.
We understand that the double debit order caused inconvenience and led to the submission of your complaint. Please note that an SMS notification was sent on 22 December 2025 advising that the December 2025 premium collection was unsuccessful.
We attempted to contact you at the number provided, but unfortunately, there was no response.
Please do not hesitate to contact us, for any future concerns or compliments.
Kind regards,
Social Resolutions Team
