Excessive Life Policy Premium Increase

I received a letter from Hollard Life to advise that my "guaranteed premium period" on my life policy has expired (I took out a life policy approximately 15 years ago). This means that they can now apply premium increases as they see fit. Over and above the normal annual premium increase, they have app**** an additional 25% premium increase. They advise that this is for my "well-being"!! Note that there is no increase in cover/benefit. While this excessive premium increase is probably legal (likely small print on the policy signed 15 years ago), I suggest that it is somewhat *********. It is a fact that the majority of retirees retire on limited/fixed incomes and cannot absorb increases of this magnitude. Furthermore, what prevents Hollard from applying this level of increase annually (compounded of course) until the policy holder is finally drained and eventually has no option but to cancel the policy. The thought crosses one's mind that immediate cancellation before being drained further is possibly the best option. Either way, the only winner here is Hollard - no repayment of premiums to the policy holder will be forthcoming upon policy cancellation. Two emails have been sent requesting an explanation and clarification as to how this significant premium increase benefits the policy holder - and what prevents further annual increases of this (or greater) magnitude. Remember, that they state that the increase is for the policy holders "well-being"!! I have not received a response. This post is intended to highlight the questionable (in my opinion) conduct of some insurance providers. Hopefully others will be more vigilant than I was. I was focused on family care and overlooked the small print.
