Travel insurance and COVID

To whomever reads this:

My girlfriend took out travel insurance for a trip to Thailand that we had planned for April this year. Due to COVID our trip was not possible. Flights were cancelled- there was no possible way for us to go on our trip.

In the interest of an honest review I must mention that being somewhat forgetful together with all the chaos in these past months we didn't email Hollard until this morning. This was an oversight on our part.

Hollard rep**** with some screenshot of their T&Cs saying that they would not refund any of the insurance amount. This is **********. How they justify taking money to insure a trip that never happened is beyond me. Profiting from a pandemic like this is sickening. Irrespective of when our trip was planned for the fact that it never happened should have some relevance- there was no trip to insure so why should Hollard retain our money? Because they have some clever wording in their T&Cs? This might work once- but I hope that anyone reading this helps in teaching this company that we as consumers have a choice moving forward and won't support a company that conducts itself in this manner.

Companies choose how to respond to unusual situations and they can either be fair or look for a way to benefit themselves and disregard their customers. While I'm sure legally they have made sure they can get away with a lot, morally we as consumers still have the power to support or avoid this company. We can make choices too- and our choices have a really big impact.

While Hollard has made their position on this clear- and given that position I don't expect a fair outcome from this- I thought it worth posting a review anyway. I'm sure like I would many people reading this will avoid this company. Some companies are just and fair, others trick customers with hidden conditions and clauses. My view of a company that I had complete trust in has changed- I hope anyone reading this saves themselves some money and frustration. We chose Hollard as my aunt worked for them- I wish I'd read a review like this before we chose an insurance company.

Reviewer Update
I think it's VERY ironic that reading some other reviews Hollard are apparently advising clients that processes are delayed due to COVID. Imagine if us as customers also had our processes delayed, and we only emailed Hollard AFTER their policy cancellation dates- wouldn't that be something that should warrant the same understanding that Hollard expects from it's customers when they have delays? Just a thought.
