Left destitute after Cape Town storm

We have been homeless since the storm that hit Cape Town on the 6th June 2017.

It has been 10 days now since the Digicall assessor declared our house unlivable; and we still have not had approval for any alternative accommodation from Hollard!! We are squatting in friend's homes and running out of people’s generosity.

We have been packing up our home and contents with water streaming down walls and light fittings; fatigue and total chaos has been our experience over the last weeks and still after 9 days of being run-around by Digicall and Hollard, Hollard is now insisting on 3 quotes and the deposit is up to us to pay until they approve one of them!

As far as Hollard and Digicall are concerned, my wife and I, and our child can live in an unlivable house or on the streets indefinitely until they have their 3 quotes to approve.

Hi Lynne

I was told last week that we will be getting the final cost of repair with timeframes today, but that isn't my issue.

Why hasn't Hollard given us formal communication/approval or payout to get temporary accommodation ? They were informed already on the 7th that the house was un-livable.

Someone from Digicall (your assessor partner) called me the same day of the assessor's visit on the 6th of June and said that she had got authorization for us to get a week of alternative accommodation, which we did...but Hollard doesn't know anything about that ?

Jo-Mare Bezuidenhout form Digicall asked for 2 quotes on the 13th of June, when I informed them that the week of alternative accomodation was coming to a close, but when I called them to get an update on the 14th after not hearing anything after submitting the quotes, I was told by Marisca to contact Hollard directly rather ?

When I called the Hollard call center on the 14th to inform them, they said that there was nothing on the system approving a week of alternative accommodation under the claim and I should email the two quotes to them, which I did to the address they gave me, **********

I also got 3 more quotes as advised on the 15th by Keshia Rabany from Hollard, but those have already expired due to the public holiday and no one being available at Hollard to approve anything in time.

As a result we have been forced to move into a house now in Plumstead that we have found, the rate is R19,000 per month with a deposit of R1,500. This is only available until the 22nd of July so we will have to get more quotes if the repairs take longer.

So far, alternative rentals fees have cost R27,700.00
- 8th to the 20th of June, at a rate of R600 per day, no deposit (12 days = R7,200.00)
- 18th June to the 22nd of July, at a rate of R19,000 per month, deposit R1,500 (35 days)

If the repair estimate that we get from Hollard is more than 35 days, then I will have to get more quotes.

It's now 13:00 and still no one has contacted me from Hollard to give an update on anything!

Got feedback from Digicall that alternative accomodation has been approved, just awaiting confirmation email.

Contacted by Hollard and Digicall who confirmed the alternative accomodation and the process we should follow to be paid out for accomodation expenses.
