Inadequate Motorcycle Parking Facilities

On Sunday 30 June 2017 just after 9 am I visited Gateway Shopping Centre in on my motorcycle, as is my custom on a Sunday morning. Given the lack of proper parking facilities for motorcycles at Gateway I parked my motorcycle in a very quiet spot near the entrance to McDonalds and Gateway. The motorcycle was in a corner and not obstructing any pedestrian flow whatsoever. I was immediately approached by an officious individual by the name of Sipho who said he was the Ops Manager for Gateway and that they were going to clamp my motorcyle and that I should move. Not wanting a situation to develop I left Gateway and went into Umhlanga Village where I received a warm welcome. Whilst I appreciate that the rule book of Gateway sanctions this I'm left somewhat perturbed by the heavy handed, draconian attitude of Gateway management. I have supported the centre handsomely over many many years, being a local and I am quite happy to take my patronage elsewhere given this incident. At the end of the day business is about building relations (not alienating customers) and sadly due to the actions of Sipho a number of retailers will now suffer as I, my family and friends elect to go elsewhere. It is the very same retailers who are tenants at Gateway, who pay rent to Old Mutual Properties and who ultimately keep Sipho and other staff members in a job.
