Trouble exchanging sale item

I bought an item online at Bash(Foschini) the item was on promotion at the time of the purchase, it was delivered but unfortunately it was small so I went in store (Kathu Mall) to exchange for a different size, the item was no longer on promotion. I was told I need to pay the difference even though I am exchanging the very same item just a different size???
