Slow Service

· My 75 year old mother the account holder has been with Foschini since the 80’s or 90’s, her Foschini account had a funeral cover which she was paying for every month. Last year in October 2016 she was diagnosed with a very rare aggressive cancer. She was put on chemotherapy days after she was diagnosed, because the cancer was at the advance stage. I kept on paying on her behalf, because she was no longer fit. Mid-January 2017 she was put on radiation soon after the chemo she was an inpatient at Wits Donald Gordon Hospital; she was put in an isolation room for the duration of the period she was there. Early February 2017 one of her doctor’s told me that my mother has only little time left to live, and I need to spend as much time as possible with her. My heart sank; I couldn’t think straight all I knew was that I needed to be there for her.

· I literally put my life on hold I was always at her bedside, and her health was slowly deteriorating. I arrived early in the morning everyday and would leave around 6pm in the evening. This went on everyday of the week; I was there from Monday to Monday. On the 21st of February 2017 as I was preparing myself to go visit/see her, her doctor called me and told me she passed away shortly before 7am that morning, I was devastated because nothing can ever prepare you for the death of your own mother.

· I only skipped February to pay her account as I was always by her side, prior to that her account was always paid and she had a very good credit record. On the 21st the same day that she passed away I received an sms from Foschini at 12H01, informing me that a payment needs to be paid on her account. I never got around doing that, because I was a mess literally, I was running out of my mind. I was busy with undertakers and I had a funeral to plan. I just had a lot on my plate. After the funeral I was busy with my assignments as the submission dates were close to each other. The plan was to go personally to Foschini after everything has settled and formally inform them of my mother’s passing.

· And indeed on the 17th of March 2017 I went to Foschini Jabulani, I informed them of her passing and I gave them the required documents, I even filled out a claim form, but I still haven’t heard anything from the claims department. I want to point out again that my mother never skipped her payments and I always made sure of that. And technically the only month that was skipped is February since she passed away in February. I still don’t understand what the holdup is. Under normal circumstances the account would have been paid, but due to the seriousness of her ill health I never got around doing that.

From Pauline (daughter of the deceased)
