Product was not exchanged

I recently purchased some makeup products and it was turned down when I wanted it returned. It was in it's original packaging since it has not been used or opened. But according to the consultant the exchangeis within 30 days only. What happened to the consumer act where a the grace period is actually 6 months? Due to work purposes I was unable to exchange it within 30 days. I am highly dissatisfied that this huge retail store is not practising the law. Now I am stuck with something I am not happy with and have no use for. So how many other consumers have been turned down only not to realise by government law they have the right to exchange products within 6 months. After advising the consultant of the credit act I was turned down. Is the staff unaware of the laws within this country we living in???
