No Refund on Lay-By

I made a lay-by in November 2017 and took it out on the 31 December 2017 but unfortunately when i got home 1 of the items I didn't like the fit. So today i decided to return it for a refund but was told I can't get my cash back as this was a lay-by they can only exchange it for me but not any where on your return policy on the back of your receipt it mentions this. Please do some thing about this as it's day light *******.
