Money lost after gift voucher expiry date

I have logged a complaint, once at the client service centre via telephone from the shop -Basil the team leader informed the agent to inform me, that the gift vouchers expire after 3 years, then the money is gone. I find it difficult to understand. I usually keep my gift vouchers until I see something I like, or need. I paid with a gift voucher I got in 1998, that is correct 1998 at a Woolworths store about 2 weeks ago, without any problems. Why is it that the money can be missing from a gift voucher bought at Foschini longer than 3 years ago!! It stipulated on the gift card that it expires, BUT not that the money will be gone. A while ago, I also had an old gift voucher from Milady's, the store manager just made a call, and all was corrected. I am logging this call, because, I also logged it 3x on the Fochini website, with NO response. The value of the gift vouchers is about R500.
