Handed over without any payment notifications.

So after years of being a customer I wanted to use my card at my local Total Sport this morning after almost a year of not using it, just to find out that I have been handed over for debt collection. I did my last payment on the account in May 2020 and to my knowledge after requesting the outstanding total amount this was the final payment. Apparently the info was incorrect and I still owed them R2400. All good, but I never received a single sms or email notifying me of the outstanding amount as for me to do payments. I've never missed a payment in almost 30 years and now all of a sudden I need to contact the IDC to get this sorted out. During maybe the toughest year in modern history this happens...... I will contact the IDC tomorrow and settle the amount, but this has just cost them a customer of more than 20 years. I think this is extremely bad service as a sms or email to notify of arrears payment would have resolved this in one go.
