Foschini doesn't accept 5 Rand coins

Today we bought items at Foschini/Somerset Mall for R1.300 and asked the employee if we can pay with 5 Rand coins. She confirmed that this would be no problem but it must be South African 5 Rand coins!!! I was puzzled about this as South Africa is the one and only country in the world which has 5 Rand coins! I hope she didn't think that we would pay with Zimbabwean 5 Rand coins!!! Never mind, we went to the till and wanted to pay but were told that they can not accept our coins as they would be old. I asked her what she means and she said that they would only accept the new 5 Rand coins but not the old copper/nickel ones. I told her that this is the first shop in South Africa that doesn't accept the older 5 Rand coins and that they are still current. Her reply was that the old 200 Rand bank notes and my 5 Rand coins would not be in circulation anymore and I should try to change them in the bank! She was right about the 200 Rand notes but it seems that Foschini makes their own regulations when it comes to current and old SA money. South Africa has two different 5 Rand coins in circulation and I guess that every child here in this country knows this. How can Foschini employ people and let them work at a till in a big shopping mall if these people don't even know that both our current 5 Rand coins are in circulation and valid? We left and bought the items at another shop. Obviously we paid there with our "old" 5 Rand coins and the lady at the till in this shop was very happy about the change.
