Beware of Renting a Property from Etchells & Young
I've been renting for the past 3 years since I moved up to Joburg and have only put in an offer this week to buy my own property. I've literally never had any issues with estates agents not returning the deposit money as I always treat each place I occupy as my own and when I ended my lease agreement at the end of August with Etchells & Young, I expected to have no hassle in receiving my deposit back. During my stay I reported everything that was broken or not functioning accordingly and it was fixed by the agent timeously and I really didn't have any problems with them besides the over billing of electricity which they explained it's beyond their control and that is the reason I decided to move out. Upon moving out, I made absolutely sure that everything was cleaned thoroughly and to the level I had found it. To my shock yesterday I received a list of reasons why I wouldn't receive my deposit back and most of these are things that were highlighted in my entry snag list. I'm so disappointed at Etchells & Young as they are obviously just trying to make a quick buck and I really didn't expect this level of unprofessionalism from such a reputable property management company. Beware!!
We are really sorry that you feel we are unprofessional and trying to make a quick buck out of you, when all that we are doing is following the law and the stipulations in your lease agreement. Unfortunately you are being rather economical with the truth when you say that you returned the property in the same condition that you found it. This is not that case as per your signed exit inspection.
Perhaps when you own your own investment property, you will see the value of a professional company like Etchells & Young, who does not simply take your word that everything is perfect, but takes the time and makes the effort to do a proper inspection, then follows the process thereby ensuring that the property is returned to the proper state, fit for the next tenant.
