Overflowing petrol gauge

The incident in question happened on Monday 19 November 2018, at 05:22 at Engen Die Wilgers in Lynnwood Road, Pretoria.

The attendant was asked to fill my tank with Unleaded 95, just to Automatic Stop. Unfortunately, for some reason the pump's automatic stop gauge did not work, which resulted in my petrol tank overflowing and petrol spilling out and onto the ground. When I asked the attendant what is going on, and who must pay for the spilled petrol, he just shrugged and looked at me. I asked if I can speak to the manager, and the attendant said it was too early I must wait. I work in Johannesburg and was on a tight schedule, thus I could not wait and just paid so I could leave.

I feel that this problem: 1. was handled very unprofessionally by the attendant; 2. was unjust for me as customer to pay for the fault, as it was a pump fault and not my responsibility; 3. should have been resolved by the manager, whether he was on site or not.

I am a loyal customer to Engen garages, as I always get good service and rewards from my bank for filling up at your station. Yet this incident has resulted in me having been put through extra financial strain (a normal tank fill averages at R600, this time I had to pay R780) as well as dealing with unprofessionalism. In today's economy and with the high petrol prices, nobody can afford to pay for a mistake that was not your fault, but the company's!

Just a side note - I normally visit Engen Rossouw street, where I get the most friendly service and smiles all around! I even tried calling the Rossouw street branch to compliment them, but no one ever picks up. But the attendants there are excellent! Thus I was utterly disappointed and upset by this terrible service I received just down the road from the same company.
