Ekurhuleni not closing my rates account and deduction rates from the new owner as well.
I sold my house in Germiston. On 8 April 2021 it was transferred to the new owner. In the May 2021 Ekurhuleni refunded my deposit. On 30 June 2021 I sent the transfer of owner proof to Antoinette Joubert in the accounts department at Ekurhuleni per her request so that she could forward it to the rates department so that they could close my account. It is now almost 4 months later and they have not closed my account. They continue to deduct the rates from my credit on my account. I now have only R601 credit the account, so next month my account will be in the red. The conveyancing attorneys (CBI in Alberton) are doing nothing. They held back R4990 of my money and paid it to Ekurhuleni for some reason. At least R4000 of this money should be refunded to me. Ekurhuleni help desk says I must come in in person to cancel the account but I now live in Port Elizabeth so this would be difficult. I am retired and I don't have lots of money to blow. Ekurhuleni are deducting the rates twice each month. Once from my account and also from the new owner. Surely it's obvious that my account must closed. I've sent them the documentation they requested. nearly four months ago.
