Concerns Regarding Electricity Disconnections and Payment Arrangements in Ekurhuleni
I am a homeowner in the City of Ekurhuleni and moved into my new home in November 2025. While my family has enjoyed living in the area, I am concerned about the City's approach to debt collection and its unwillingness to accommodate residents who are making genuine efforts to settle their accounts.
After accumulating arrears of approximately R14,000, I paid R9,100 as requested by the City, and my electricity supply was restored. Shortly thereafter, I was informed that a further R4,350 remained outstanding. I acknowledged this balance and advised that I would be able to make an additional payment at the end of September 2026.
Despite this, my electricity was disconnected again on 14 September 2026. When I approached the municipality, I offered to pay R2,500 immediately and requested a payment arrangement for the balance. Unfortunately, this request was declined, and I was informed that the full amount would need to be settled before my electricity could be restored.
While I fully appreciate the City's responsibility to recover outstanding revenue, I believe greater consideration should be given to residents who are actively trying to meet their obligations. The refusal to accept a reasonable payment arrangement has placed a significant burden on my family, particularly my children, who rely on electricity for their education and daily needs.
I respectfully urge the City to adopt a more flexible and customer-focused approach when dealing with residents experiencing temporary financial difficulties.
