Poor performance from a Higher Education Provider

Dear Pearson South Africa, Eduvos, CTI,

I am writing to express my deep frustration and dissatisfaction with the services provided by your institution, specifically at the Menlyn campus. The student whom I sponsor is significantly behind in their course, and while some responsibility lies with the student regarding motivation and accommodation, the issues are compounded by your institution's inadequate support and service.

It is unacceptable that I was never directly contacted to discuss any issues. The student's transcript, course, project, and exam dates are planned so tightly that it is impossible to adhere to the schedule, especially after you wasted over a month of the student's time at the start of their studies. Your internal guidelines, such as booking exams at certain times and waiting excessive periods for marks, are impractical.

For instance, the transcript requires one exam today and another tomorrow. Writing one exam today but receiving the mark late the next day results in missing the next booking slot. This absurdity makes success nearly impossible for any student. Furthermore, I am charged monthly while your institution fails to meet expectations.

An example: the student submitted their C# project on the 18th, but system faults on your end prevented the submission from being seen. The student followed up and was asked to resubmit on the 22nd. Despite a commitment to mark the work, we are still waiting for the mark as of today, the 29th. This morning, we were informed that the responsible person is on study leave. The student cannot book any further exams before this mark is in, per your rules.

The constant waiting, slow responses on Teams, and delays in receiving marks are unacceptable. Please explain to me what service delivery is and how a student is expected to succeed and meet their schedules if this is how things are managed. This has been an ongoing struggle through every module.

I demand answers and immediate action to resolve these issues.

Sincerely,

The call I received this morning was not aimed at resolving the issue but rather to argue how wrong I am and to absolve the institution of any responsibility.

Firstly, I was informed that the assignment was not marked due to an expired contract. When I raised the question of when either the student or I were informed of this, I was told to refer to the contract end date. This response is entirely unacceptable.

At the very least, the student should have been informed of the contract issue, particularly given he was waiting for the assessment to be marked. I have screenshots of conversations with advisors where promises to mark and follow up were made, with no mention of the contract issue being a barrier.

It is unacceptable that we waited weeks only to receive this excuse for the delay.

To illustrate:

  • 18 Oct: Student submitted project and requested marking.
  • 22 Oct: Instructor requested assessment.
  • 22 Oct: Student confirmed the upload was visible on their end.
  • 22 Oct: Instructor requested a URL due to visibility issues.
  • 22 Oct: Student provided the project via zip file.
  • 22 Oct: Instructor acknowledged receipt and committed to marking the project.
  • 30 Oct: Student requested an update on the marks, with no response received until speaking with the exam coordinator, who informed us that the instructor was on leave and the project was not yet marked.

Where in this timeline was the contract issue communicated to either the student or myself?

Throughout the student's enrolment, I have not been contacted once to discuss any issues, nor have I received any transcripts, progress reports, or updates on the student's performance and the fact that he was falling behind on his studies. This lack of communication is unacceptable, as it left me with the sole responsibility of paying fees without any involvement in the student's academic journey and the ability to intervene.

Additionally, during the call, I was informed that advisors have 48 hours to mark assignments/assessments, and that no exams on the student's transcript are scheduled only a day apart. This is a blatant lie.

Some exams are indeed scheduled only a day apart, while others are two days apart. Moreover, the policy that prevents booking exams before receiving previous results, combined with your advisors’ 48-hour marking window, directly impacts the student’s ability to meet these target dates.

Examples from the transcript:

  • Computer Literacy Practical Assessment: 16-03-2023
  • Computer Literacy Practical Assessment: 17-03-2023
  • Personal Skills Video Submission: 03-04-2023
  • Personal Skills Online Assessment: 04-04-2023

  • Processing and Logic Concepts Quiz: 03-05-2023
  • Processing and Logic Concepts Assessment: 05-05-2023

  • Program Design Quiz: 24-05-2023
  • Program Design Quiz: 26-05-2023

  • Computer Literacy Online Assessment: 14-03-2023
  • Computer Literacy Practical Assessment 1: 16-03-2023
  • Computer Literacy Practical Assessment 2: 17-03-2023
This is only a small sample of the numerous modules affected.

Furthermore, the student is attempting to complete his studies using https://mylms.vossie.net, a platform that frequently experiences outages and displays the error "Service Unavailable, please try again later." This is unacceptable, considering the fees paid for these services.

In summary, the institution has demonstrated a lack of communication, slow marking processes, unachievable target dates, and unreliable online services. I am utterly disgusted by your call this morning and will not be recommending your services to any future students.

Do not contact me again unless you intend to resolve these issues rather than shifting blame onto the student.
