Extremely Disappointed in Lack of Communication and Urgency
We consulted Dr Devchand as a private patient because my father does not have medical aid and his neurological symptoms were escalating rapidly. We were seeking urgent assistance to obtain a diagnosis and initiate treatment as soon as possible. At the consultation, Dr Devchand provided a diagnosis and assured us that a report would be completed by the end of that same week. She also undertook to liaise with his government doctors to arrange an MRI and begin treatment urgently. Unfortunately, this did not happen. For almost four weeks, we phoned and emailed nearly daily to follow up. Each time, the receptionist informed us that Dr Devchand was doing ward rounds, not in the office, or attending to other patients. There was absolutely no direct communication from Dr Devchand during this time — no update, no explanation for the delay, and no attempt to manage expectations. Meanwhile, my father’s condition continued to deteriorate. We incurred substantial financial costs keeping him in a frail care facility close to the hospital in anticipation of treatment that we were told would start imminently. After four weeks — and only after we indicated that we would escalate the matter to the HPCSA — we finally received the report. The report appeared unprofessional and even contained a spelling error in my father’s name. We are extremely disappointed in the level of care, communication, and professionalism shown. In cases involving serious neurological conditions, urgency and communication are critical. Sadly, this experience did not inspire trust, and we would not feel comfortable continuing under Dr Devchand’s care.

Unacceptable delays, lack of care, and poor communication
I had a deeply disappointing experience with Dr Devchand’s practice. We privatley funded an MRI. After the MRI was completed, repeated calls to the practice throughout December 2025 went unanswered or unresolved, and no follow-up consultation was scheduled. In January 2026, we were contacted by a third-party billing department regarding an outstanding account. This was the first time we were made aware of any balance due. The invoice had been sent to an incorrect email address and was never raised with us during our multiple contact attempts. Once we were informed, we settled the amount immediately. Only after proof of payment was provided were we told that the doctor needed to see me “urgently.” Furthermore, Dr Devchand was my treating neurologist and advised me to seek further care through the state system due Medical Aid not approving treatment. We followed this advice and presented at Somerset Hospital, where we were informed that all referrals must be submitted by the specialist via the Vula app. Despite this being clearly communicated to the practice, Dr Devchand refused to submit the referral through Vula and instead directed us back to a general practitioner at additional cost. This left me unable to access public neurology services and caused significant delay in care. The sequence of events, the lack of continuity of care, and the refusal to complete the required state referral process caused unnecessary stress and delay while I remained symptomatic. Based on this experience, I cannot recommend this practice to patients seeking consistent, responsive, and patient-focused neurological care.

Be careful of Neurologist, Dr Devchand
Be wary when dealing with neurologist, Dr Devchand. She misdiagnosed and prescribed the totally incorrect treatment for my son. Had we not got a 2nd opinion from an independent doctor, my son would have suffered brain damage and possibly death. Question the diagnosis and treatment. And get a second opinion!

Be careful of Neurologist, Dr Devchand
Be wary when dealing with neurologist, Dr Devchand. She misdiagnosed and prescribed the totally incorrect treatment for my son. Had we not got a 2nd opinion from an independent doctor, my son would have suffered brain damage and possibly death. Question the diagnosis and treatment. And get a second opinion!
