Messed up refund

On March 6th, 2017, I rented a vehicle from Thrifty Car Rental at Cape Town airport. As per normal procedure I authorised a debit of R7500 as security deposit. I returned the car with no issues on March 12.

After a reminder on my side, the deposit (which minus an extra driver charge came to R7298.27) was refunded to my account on April 12th. However, through an error on Thrifty's side, the amount of R7298.27 was deposited twice.

When I noticed this (on April 18th) I immediately notified Thrifty of their error and I was asked to authorise a debit so that they could recover the additional refund. So I authorised Thrifty by email to debit the amount of R7298.27 from my account. On April 21st my bank contacted me to authorise a recall of the amount, which I also approved, thinking that this is part of the normal debit procedure I had previously authorised with Thrifty. However, a few hours after my bank had recalled the amount of R7298.27, Thrifty also debited the same amount, so that I was again left without my refund.

Since April 21st, Thrifty has been completely unresponsive to my emails notifying them of the situation and has at the time of writing (June 6th) not yet acknowledged the error nor refunded me my deposit. What makes this even more unpleasant is that I was completely honest with them and did my best to help them fix their mistake instead of sitting on the money until they realised the error themselves.

This incident has certainly ruined my renting experience with this company which I had used without issue in the past.

Reviewer Update

It is now more than a month after the above response (and three months since I first contacted Thrifty about this issue) and I have yet to hear from Thrifty's customer service. Do I really need to go to court for something so clear-cut and easy to rectify?
