It is difficult to imagine a car rental company worse than Dollar Thrifty Car Rental South Africa. While the frontline staff tries their best to project an air of professionalism, it is the back-office workings that fail them miserably. On a recent business trip to Johannesburg, my experience was more or less as follows: 1. Booking online went smoothly. 2. Collecting the car at OR Tambo - a nightmare of incompetence. 3. Extending the rental period - it was next to impossible to reach them via telephone so I suggested they call me to extend. This was fine until an employee forgot to log the extended period - the very next day I received a thinly veiled threat of penalties and whatnot as the vehicle was now overdue. 4. Changing to a different vehicle at OR Tambo - another nightmare of incompetence - the system showed no pick-ups available, yet there were at least two parked in the lot. 5. Obtaining tax invoices - a nightmare of incompetence - from waiting endless periods of time on the telephone to be summarily cut off after waiting the better part of half an hour... When employees start telling you they are looking for opportunities elsewhere and this during the pandemic, you know there is something seriously wrong with a company. To their credit, they prove the existence of a benevolent force - it is only through divine intervention they still survive as a business.
