Unfairly Charging Interest!

On a monthly basis I settle my Discovery Credit Card in full. Last month I settled my Discovery Card in full on the due date (28 July). My Investec (primary banking) account was subsequently (also on 28 July) debited directly by Discovery Card. After complaining to Discovery Card about this at the time they offered absolutely no help. They told me to do an EFT out of my Discovery account to reverse the double debit at my own expense. Which I subsequently did on 5 August.

As I did this on 5 August my balance for the next payment cycle was nil. However I called today (30 September) to offer to settle my account in order to avoid paying any interest at the end of September (the next payment cycle). I was initially told that I could not avoid paying the interest despite the error being their fault and my offer to settle the account in full. After escalating the issue to the call centre operator’s manager (Simpiwe Phakathi ) I was told that the settlement amount could not be quantified and that there was therefore no solution to the problem and consequently no way to avoid paying the interest.

Firstly the double debit was not my fault and I therefore should not have been liable for the EFT fee. And secondly I should not be made to pay interest on the reversal especially in light of the fact that I am offering to settle the account in full as I do at the same time every month.
