The reason why you should not change from FNB to Discovery

Discovery blocked my card for non payment when I have more than my maximum credit facility. I recently received a refund from a merchant (6 days ago), the amount I received meant that I now have more than my credit limit in my account, meaning I am now earning interest on the account but Discovery says that I need to pay in R444.45 in order to unblock my account.

The credit amount of greater than my total credit facility clearly shows as available on my profile but my account remains blocked. Calling the call center and speaking to seniors has not yielded any positive results.

The message from Discovery from this morning: "You've missed your minimum payment due on your single credit facility. Please pay 444.45 to avoid penalties."

How can I be in arrears when I have credit in my credit card?

I am happily sticking to my FNB credit card and will likely close my Discovery account as this is the not the first issue I have encountered with them.

NB: Last week I was stranded at the till (card declined) due to a Discovery system failure.

Hi Anish

Money refunded to your credit card account is considered an account credit, it doesn't count as a payment or partial payment.

This isn't a Discovery Bank rule - this applies to all credit cards.

Thank you for responding AJ.

If I leave the account as it is for the next year, I will earn interest and end up with additional funds, but I am told that I owe money?

Paying the minimum amount will mean that I have even more credit in my account which does not make sense, all I want to do is use the money that shows as available.

How can I not have paid my account when I have greater than my credit limit as available funds?

All banks doing things this way does not make it logical nor correct :)

I hear what you're saying, Anish.

Unfortunately, only an actual payment into the account will be recognised by the system that the amount owing was settled.

Thank you again for responding AJ.

Please can you elaborate on this, If I do not pay the supposed "account in arrears", how does discovery intend to get the "money back" from me?

Thank you,

Hi Anish

A manual payment of the minimum amount due would need to be paid to get access to the funds again.
