The Exclusionary Discovery Bank
I tried opening an account with Discovery. They tried to verify my address via geo-location. That failed. They then requested physical proof of residence. I furnished a signed lease agreement and monthly statement from the landlord.
For whatever reason, my lease agreement is not good enough. First they said my name is not on the lease. Which is BS. Then they said the issue with my lease is that it is a month-to-month. They require a lease with an expiry date. More BS.
Now, Discovery has sent me a Christmas present of charging me a monthly fee on an account I have never had access to. I requested to cancel this whole arrangement. Their answer was that I need to comply with FICA regulations to cancel the account. In other words, I need to furnish proof of residence to cancel. The same proof of residence that is not good enough to open an account to begin with.
By the way, my partner, daughter and I are on Discovery Medical Aid and Vitality. We will be shopping around in the new year. I'm taking my business elsewhere.
Do you have any feedback regarding the email I sent? I noticed that I am still accruing account fees on an account I can't use.
