****MED BY DISCOVERY BANK IPHONE BENEFIT!!!!!

I feel completely ****med by Discovery iPhone Benefit!! The fact that Discovery Bank takes the FULL AMOUNT of the phone that you have chosen after their website says you will pay monthly installments IS A COMPLETE ****. I am actually so furious that I have fallen for this. I worked it out, it seemed to be cheaper than MTN if I met my goals, but the shock of seeing the full amount of the phone taken off my account after taking the iPhone benefit has been overwhelming.

This extract of their website clearly talks about a monthly installment: If you do not meet any of your weekly Vitality Active Rewards goals, you will forfeit your monthly cash back and will have to pay the full instalment amount for the iPhone. You will then be liable to Discovery Bank for a monthly instalment amount due on your qualifying Discovery Card. This amount can vary depending on the retail price of the iPhone at the time of collection.

Nowhere does it mention you are paying the phone in FULL.

Discovery, I am not happy at all. You have **** in your marketing and I have fallen into the trap of getting a phone I would never have bought through your scheme had I known that it was not monthly installments.

In fact, if you compare the Apple Watch benefit - that one takes a monthly installment from me when I don't meet my fitness goals. It's similarly named to the iPhone Benefit. There is nothing in the iPhone Benefit that says you are taking all my money from me for the phone. I can't express how upset I am.

I do not want to return the phone - it's the phone I wanted. I would like the benefit to be app**** the way your website explains it - in monthly installments.

How can you stoop to these levels. You had a few occasions to come clean with me. Yesterday I called Discovery Bank to find out why I didn't qualify for the phone benefit - I was told I needed sufficient credit to be eligible for the benefit. So I thought about it all night, transferred sufficient credit to the card this morning, and went through the benefit process to get the phone. I did not swipe my Bank card to get the phone - I went through the benefit process where the IMEI is scanned. At no time at all was I made aware that I needed sufficient credit to PAY FOR THE PHONE.

PLEASE FIX THIS ASAP. At the very least be honest to your customers so that nobody else falls for this blatant lie / ****. And make right with me in the best way that you can.

Hi James K
Thank you for your comments and for bringing this matter to our attention.
We do apologise if you didn’t understand the iPhone benefit. Please see the requirements and Terms and Conditions on our Banking app:
• The iPhone benefit will appear as a budget facility purchase on your credit card and will reduce your available balance on your credit card by the outstanding amount of the iPhone for the full 24 month period. Interest is charged at your dynamic borrowing rate.

Jaco

Thanks for replying, Jaco. The **** for me was that I funded the phone by transferring money into my discovery card to get the “benefit”, but nobody said I would lose that money once the benefit was taken up. So you’ve taken my money that I transferred in, and put it into a budget facility which I will be paying back.

Can you see how I’ve been ****med? I paid for the phone by transferring the full amount of the phone into my account. You took that money and moved it into a budget facility, and now I am paying a monthly fee towards the money I transferred into my account.

I’ve since realized after talking to your call center that what’s supposed to happen is that the funding should come from a credit facility on my card and that amount is moved to a budget scheme whereby monthly payments are made to pay it off. This is vastly different to what’s happened to me.

Please increase my credit limit by the phone amount so that I can put the money into my fnb account, and also so that I can feel less ****med by your ill-worded marketing and execution of a “benefit”.

Hi James K,
Yes, the phone does utilize your available funds as it is used in your budget facility.
The budget facility creates a monthly installment that is moved to your straight facility on a monthly basis. However depending on how many goals you have achieved during your cycle your cash backs would then cover some or all of your monthly installment for you.
Kindly note, due to the NCR we are not able to just increase your credit limit, however if you want to increase your credit limit, please do phone our bankers to pass a verification and request for a limit increase.
Regards
Jaco

I’m more confused now. I paid the money into the discovery account to cover the phone. It was used to pay the phone. Now there’s a budget facility for the phone which I will be paying off? This means I’m paying for the phone twice since it was not funded with credit - it was funded by my real money.

Please explain this again in terms of real money, credit and budget so I can try to understand.

I believe you’ve made an error and I’m not happy that it keeps being dismissed.

I would be far more happy to be wrong.

Call me if you need to.

I have read the terms and conditions several times and I still don’t see how my money that I transferred into my card from another bank was used to fully fund the iPhone I had chosen.

I also don’t understand how my fully paid iPhone is now in a budget facility that I need to pay off per month.

Please please please can someone investigate this and clear it up? I need to know why I’m paying double for the phone (less the cash back).

Hello! Discovery !! Do you have any accountants that work there and can review what you have done to me? I am still waiting for an answer on how I’ve fully funded the phone myself, and then you have created a budget facility that I must also fund on a monthly basis with installments that vary based on how many goals I reach. How can I fund the phone and then also pay you installments for it? What am I missing here?

Please reply with a case number or some reference that I can use to pass onto the banking ombudsman.
