Misleading DISCOVERY

I joined Discovery Bank around 5 months ago, and it was their loyalty program and really good interest rates on savings account that influenced me to open this account. For the first 3 months I received game tiles for my spends at the partner stores, but it stopped all of a sudden, even though I kept spending at these stores. I have a consultant at a branch who from the beginning said he will deal with all my queries and assist me with new products etc. He added me on a WhatsApp chat with him and his PA, and I asked him about this issue. I still have his reply on WhatsApp, but it says that Discovery had a nationwide down on the loyalty program and it will all be credited when it's sorted out. This though never happened, as I wrote a complaint to the complaints email address and I received a involved response, explaining how the tiers change and then the spend must be upper to receive rewards. My tier never went up though, and I now believe that they are actively and purposefully misleading the public by these amazing loyalty offers, only to then stop it and hope the customer just leaves it. Well, I'm not a leave it guy, so Id love to know who else has had a similar experience.

Hi Yuvna,

I am aware of the explanation given to me by the consultant. What concerns me is the two different responses I received for the same query. And why is it, that I stop getting the benefits the moment I don't use my Savings Account?

There seems to be a situation here, whereby Discovery is trying to force me to use my money in a certain way, and if I don't, they publish me by disqualifying me from their loyalty scheme, even though I'm spending at the same rate I was before with the preferred partners. Furthermore, this was not made clear to me on the outset, and I believe it's misleading.

I have spoken to a few different people who also have Discovery accounts and they tell me they are confused by the program and have this just decided to leave it. Now I wonder, if I spend with my Discovery Card at a preferred partner store, I'm certain the Ratner store in the form of a discount or Commission of sorts pays a percentage to Discovery and Discovery then pays a portion of that to the account holder who spent there. Now if Discovery decides that because the account holder doesn't have a savings account with at least R500 in, then they will rather just keep that percentage also for themselves.

I would like to see how the partner agreement is set up and whether I form a part of that passively and the legal implications.

Don't be greedy Discovery. I will not stop it here, I'm sick and tired of this type of bullying tactics.

I want my spend rewards! I will take this up with the banking ombudsman, but will keep this thread alive and update frequently.
