Invisible charges, zero accountability — my R4000 lesson with Discovery’s “Safety Pin”

On 19 August 2025, R4000 was charged to my Discovery credit card under “Ad Hoc misuse of pin fee.”

My card limit is only R1000, so it was impossible for me to overspend. The only reason I noticed was because the account showed as overdrawn — the charge did not even reflect as a visible transaction. Without that, I would never have known until debit orders started bouncing.

Assuming *****, I immediately phoned Discovery. After nearly two hours, speaking to at least eight different people (some even dropping the call), someone eventually found the charge hidden on my downloadable statement.

I was then told I had “allegedly” activated my panic pin — a feature introduced this year that is supposed to protect you in emergencies by safeguarding funds and alerting security. In practice, however, entering it “incorrectly” results in a R4000 fee: • No verification before billing. • No notification of the charge. • No security follow-up to check if I was safe. • No option to dispute or appeal.

This is not the first time it has happened in my household. A few months ago, my husband was charged R1000 for the same issue, also with no checks or response. After countless calls and emails, he eventually cancelled the service.

I kept it, believing it was a good precaution — but R4000 for a supposed mistake is unreasonable and unaffordable.

I have formally logged a complaint (***), but given how poorly this has been handled, I have little confidence in the process.

I am sharing this publicly because: 1. R4000 is an outrageous penalty for an alleged error. 2. If this happened to both my husband and me, it is likely happening to many others unnoticed. 3. Discovery’s lack of transparency, accountability, and support is unacceptable.

Clients should be protected, not punished. Discovery, you need to do better.

Do I get my money back before my debit orders start bouncing?
