Incorrectly processed debit order for over R12000 - not willing to accept responsibility

My credit card payment due date was 10 August, I settled the amount in full via EFT which cleared on the 10th (the due date). Despite this, Discovery Card debited my bank account for close to R13000 (my account went into negative).

I contacted the call centre and spoke to a very unhelpful Carmen with her scripted and unempathetic responses. Her response was there was nothing she could do and I just had to accept it ,"these things happen" was her response as to why my account was debited. She suggested I should pay my account a few days earlier (so Discovery can earn interest off my money I presume).

Discovery had no empathy, no sense of urgency, no attempt whatsoever to help me despite me informing them of the urgency and that my other debit orders would bounce because they INCORRECTLY debited my account.

I have always settled my credit card on the due date and have never had my account debited when the EFT cleared on the due date. I would like to know how Carmen or Discovery management would feel if a company emptied their bank account INCORRECTLY and they were left stranded.

This company is going bad to worse. Adrian Gore and Barry Sundelson need to know about the poor levels of service provided and no attempt to assist. I will be emailing them as well.

Reviewer Update

Whilst I still believe the service I received was atrocious when my account was debited incorrectly, I am changing my rating to 5 stars for this particular complaint since Discovery made contact quickly, apologised (not like an apology would remedy the situation) and agreed to refund my bank charges.

I have also given them the solution to help customers in future i.e. advise them to reverse the debit order with their banks and NOT "we cant do anything, wait 5 days" or "my manager says nothing can be done".
