Fee-nomenal Discovery of ***** Charges

I reluctantly chose Discovery Bank believing they’d protect me in a ***** scenario—only to be slapped with a non‐negotiable R200 “card replacement fee” after I acted responsibly and cancelled my card upon suspicion of unauthorized transactions. Worse still, after lodging a formal complaint on 17 May, I received only a generic acknowledgment promising “review” and “transparency,” yet nothing has happened in over a month.

Unfair Fees for Suspected *****

Charging a client R200 to reissue a card in the very circumstances the bank claims to guard against is patently unreasonable—and undermines trust in your *****‐prevention processes.

Lack of Follow-Up & Transparency

Despite your promise to refer my concerns to “relevant entities,” I’ve had zero updates since 17 May. Your silence contradicts your stated commitment to keeping clients “comfortable” and “in good standing.”

Breach of the Banking Code of Conduct

The Code requires banks to treat disputes promptly and fairly. Over a month without resolution or even an estimated turnaround time is unacceptable.

Poor Communication

Clients deserve clarity on turnaround times for policy–reviews; brushing concerns aside with vague assurances reflects systemic disregard for customer experience.

I expect the following from Discovery Bank:

What I Expect:

Immediate reversal of the R200 fee, given that the cancellation was due to suspected *****—not convenience.

Clear timelines for how and when you will review your replacement‐fee policy for ***** cases.

Regular status updates on my complaint until full resolution.

Lastly: I value transparency, client-centric banking: so far, in my view, Discovery has failed on both counts. I request Discovery Bank to rectify these matters urgently.

Hi Justin

Thank you so much for your patience.

I have consulted with the relevant team and Executive Relationship Manager regarding your previous complaint case, I will provide you with feedback once I have received it. The query was still with the relevant team.

Regarding the card replacement, we always encourage our clients to always protect their card details. It is the client's responsibility to protect their card and account details at all times. Our virtual cards are more convenient for online transaction as there is no replacement fee.

For suspected ***** transactions on your account, we would need the client to contact our ***** team for a card replacement, and further investigations to take place.
However in the instance that a client replaces a card on their bank app, before confirmation of the replacement there is a notification of any fees that may be charged.
The type of account that you have has one free card replacement every 12 months, thereafter you would be charged R200.

Kind regards,
Mpho.

Hi,

10 Unfortunately, your response does not solve, answer or convey any form of hint of 'accountability' to what I have addressed. I am quite aware of what safety measures to carry out - imagine if everyone followed the advice that was given above: 'encourage our clients to always protect their card details. Whilst I completely agree the client is responsible for the safety of sensitive information, the bank is liable if there are transactions that the account holder cannot account for, that is the case - and Discovery Bank has simply not handled my situation with any respect, nor professionalism. I am highly disappointed - yet also not surprised. As of late, I have not been impressed at all with Discovery Bank's disregard for client care. I am going to reiterate: No fee was communicated for the replacement card. I demand the R200 replacement fee, still. That is my request. It will not change. Lastly: 'I have consulted with the relevant team and Executive Relationship Manager regarding your previous complaint case, I will provide you with feedback once I have received it. The query was still with the relevant team.' - This part of your message in your response is what I make reference to now. It's still seemingly with, 'the relevant team' - no communication since, no follow-up, no urgency, no transparency, simply nothing.. And simply disappointed.

Hi Justin

Thank you for your feedback, we appreciate it.

Your case is still open, and our Complaints team is awaiting feedback. Unfortunately as we are awaiting feedback externally this delays our feedback and resolution to our clients.
We continue to follow up, and once the assigned Relationship Manager has feedback she will liaise it to you.

As advised, all our fees are available on our websites for clients to view.

Kind regards,
Mpho.
