Discovery does not value clients

I have been a vitality member for close to 7 years and enjoyed the travel benefits thereof. I do understand that the bank has created a zero fee account, however you can only open on if you have an ID. Now how is this not xenophobic? How is it that I can access all other Discovery products without needing an ID but not the bank? Other banks do allow non south Africans to open bank accounts with valid permits and passports, so what is so special about Discovery Bank? I even have a credit card which I cannot edit the limit cos I do not have a South African ID

To say I am appalled by this does not even begin to explain my frustration and disappointment to the point I am thinking of moving all the other products to other service providers who actually value non South Africans.

 Hi ElyJoy

Thanks for reaching out to us.

We’d love for everyone to come on board straight away and start banking healthier.

At the moment, we’re focused on building our bank from the ground up, inviting people as we make functionality available to make sure they enjoy the full Discovery banking experience.
This means that, for now, only non-South African citizens who hold permanent residence can open Discovery Bank accounts.

We look forward to bringing temporary residents with valid work permits on board soon.

We can’t say exactly when this will be available. We’re working tirelessly to make sure we roll out the most important functions. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Please keep an eye on the Discovery Bank app for updates.

Sorry by this is not good enough, when you migrated your services from FNB to Discovery bank you knew fully well that a number of clients were not permanent residents and a provision for this scenario should have been looked at then. How many years has the bank been operating? In 2018, and you want to tell me that all these years even taking into consideration the lag that there might have been due to Covid you still have not figured out how to migrate clients who have passports and no permanent residence to Discovery bank?

So while you still trying to figure this out members like me cannot access some of the vitality benefits that were enjoyed before?

As I said before this is appalling and disappointing service from what is punted to be a world class organisation

Hi Elyjoy

As a bank, we need to operate within the rules of our forex licence. This means that non-South African residents cannot open an account unless they are:

  • Foreigners who hold permanent residence (with SA ID)
  • Foreigners who hold temporary residence permits that allow them to earn an income in South Africa.

Do not worry, we are working a solution to this matter and we will release some great for you very soon.
