Discovery Bank’s Home Loan Chaos: How Incompetence and Neglect Jeopardize Your Data and Financial Security
I was in the process of applying for a home loan, but after experiencing thoroughly inadequate service from Discovery on 22 September 2025, I requested that Cheryl van Quickelberge—the agent representing SA Home Loans for Discovery Bank—cancel my application. On 23 September, Cheryl confirmed she would do so.
Fast forward to 14 October 2025, I receive an email from Discovery stating that I had quoted for contents insurance on the property, with cover scheduled to start on 21 March 2026. Even more concerning, my home loan application still shows as active on my banking app. When I called to inquire, I was told this “is just how the system works,” with only a half-hearted apology for the inconvenience.
The issues I face are clear:
Discovery representatives either fail to communicate internally or outright ignore client instructions, leaving urgent requests unprocessed.
An unauthorized credit inquiry negatively affected my credit score, triggered an anxiety attack due to improper verification, and potentially exposed me to financial harm if I had not intervened.
Whether caused by systemic flaws or agent negligence, a mere “sorry for the inconvenience” is an unacceptable response when Discovery—one of South Africa’s largest data custodians—mismanages personal and financial information I entrusted to them.
What concrete actions are being taken to prevent such reckless failures? Are we to settle for empty apologies while Discovery expects clients to expend energy untangling layers of products and services they promised to safeguard?
I will be looking into this for you and provide you with feedback as soon as possible.
kind regards
