DISCOVERY BANK DOESN'T WANT TO CLOSE MY BANK ACCOUNT

This **** bank just debited from the same credit card I've requested closure on multiple times! The next thing I will be told that I need to pay the balance yet a few days ago when I requested closure and emphasized on the emails and WhatsApp chats that they should close the account with immediate effect and should never debit from it because I'm done! Now I see the reason for the delay! They just wanted to debit some more so that they don't have to close it

Hi there,

You received a new settlement statement where it was outlined that you need to make payment before the deadline to ensure the account gets closed, however, you did not honor the statement. Please note that your settlement statement expired on the 13th of April 2026 and your account remains overdrawn and active.

Hi,
Thank you for your response, however I must correct the position being presented.
On 3 April 2026, I formally requested the closure of my Discovery Bank account through multiple channels, including email, social media, and WhatsApp communication with your agent. At that point, my account balance had already been settled to zero, and I explicitly instructed that no further debits should be processed.
Despite this, on 7 April 2026, a monthly fee of approximately R69.84 was debited from my account after my closure request had already been made. This debit is the sole reason the account reflected a negative balance.
I was subsequently contacted by a Discovery Bank representative on the same day and advised not to worry, as the account closure process would proceed.
It is therefore inaccurate to state that I failed to honour a settlement agreement. The negative balance arose only due to a debit processed after my clear instruction to close the account.
I request that this matter be handled fairly, with confirmation that:
  • The balance will not be enforced against me
  • The account will be closed in good standing
  • No adverse or negative credit reporting will occur as a result of this situation
I acted in good faith and well within reasonable timeframes, and I expect the same standard in resolving this matter.
Kind regards,
Mandla

Hi there,

We appreciate the clarification and will perform the necessary investigations.

However, please note that if your statement date falls within the account closure period, then a portion of your monthly bank fees will be deducted and will need to be settled on or before the settlement date to ensure that the account gets closed.

Good day Mandla,

We have done internal investigations and checked with the representative that reached out to you.

The process that was followed was based on a new process that allows a closure case to proceed successfully only when the owing balance is less than a R100. So in your case, this new process was followed. Therefore, the account will be closed for you successfully. We can confirm that your accounts are in progress for closure and you will be notified by email once this is complete.

We do apologize for any frustrations that might have risen due to this ordeal.

Regards,
The Discovery Bank Team
