Complaint Regarding Credit Card Application Decision
Dear Discovery Bank Customer Service,
I am writing to express my profound dissatisfaction with the handling of my recent credit card application with Discovery Bank.
I recently transitioned to Discovery Bank from FNB, as my fiancé moved to your bank and recommended that I do the same. As part of this transition, I closed my credit card with FNB and decided to open a credit card with Discovery. My gross monthly salary is well over R50,000, yet I was approved for a mere R750 credit limit. This low limit is quite frankly an insult, given my financial standing and credit history.
In response, I requested a higher limit and was asked to upload supporting documents, which I promptly did. These included my last two months’ FNB statements and my recent Discovery statement, all reflecting my salary. Despite this, I received a decline letter citing affordability issues. This is perplexing, considering my affordability assessment showed a surplus of well over R25,000 and no other debt commitments.
I challenged this decision and spoke with an assessor, providing additional information about my employment and recent promotion from Office Manager to Operations Manager two months ago. I was then asked to upload my ITA34 form, which I did immediately. However, my application was still declined due to affordability, with the explanation that my new salary does not align with my ITA34. It is obvious that my ITA34 would not reflect my new salary, given that tax runs from March to February and my salary increase occurred just two months ago.
This entire process has been incredibly frustrating. I have zero debt, all my accounts are paid up, and I use a credit card solely to build my credit score and maintain a payment history. The decision to decline my application, despite clear evidence of my financial capability, is both unjustifiable and incomprehensible.
Regrettably, due to this unsatisfactory experience, I am now considering closing my account and returning to FNB. The service, explanations, and procedures provided by Discovery Bank have been far from satisfactory, and no response can justify the outcome of my application.
I request a thorough review of my application and a reconsideration based on the accurate reflection of my financial situation.
As per your company policy your debt ratio must be less than 66% and my ratio is 4%. So, please explain that to me, how I am declined due to affordability. Absolutely unjustifiable and utter nonsense.
