Charges for a credit that I never accepted

In 2003 when Discovery Card first paired their rewards programme with Woolworths, I thought it would be a great idea to take advantage of this benefit and get a card in my wife's name.

I app**** for a card in her name, was approved and a courier delivered a card in my name several days later.

I told the courier that there must be a mistake, I had specifically requested that the card be in my wife's name.

He said that I could apply for a second card in her name, but would have to pay the annual charges on both cards. I found this unacceptable and sent him packing without accepting delivery of this card.

13 years later, in March of this year I started receiving email statements from them, detailing outstanding monthly transaction fees and interest penalties.

I contacted them immediatelly complaining that I had never accepted their card and to please close the account with no charges. They sent me an account closure form with the following fine print

"I___________________, hereby instruct Discovery Card to close my account.

I declare the decision to close my account is both voluntary and free and that I fully understand the content of this form. I understand that all

DiscoveryMotor Cards and secondary cards, will also close by this instructi on. I understand that my Apple Watch benefi t that forms part of the

Vitality Acti ve Rewards benefi t will also end, and that any outstanding balances will be charged to my Discovery Card on closure of the account.

I agree to destroy the physical credit card as well as the DiscoveryMotor Cards and secondary cards, and accept that Discovery Card will hold me

personally responsible for transacti ons made before and aft er the account has been closed.

I confi rm that the credit balance on my Discovery Card account will be transferred into the account which details have been stated above if

applicable, and I will not hold Discovery Card responsible for any incorrect banking details that I may supply.

I further accept that I will be opted out of the Discovery Miles, Health Wallet and integrated products with immediate eff ect.

I acknowledge that the account will close only if there is full settlement."

An agent phoned me, and I said that I wasn't prepared to sign the document which would acknowledge that I owed them money. She said that the accounts department would waive any fees if it was found that i had never transacted on the account. I asked for that in writing.

I'm still waiting.
