Bad banking website and service to match

Their website does not provide the most basic of functions - to pay without adding a beneficiary. You have to use the mobile app on a device that is not optimized for typing, to do it. And the support agent is 100% useless and clueless. It took her 5 minutes to figure out that their website does not have this function. I also had to explain my problem multiple time after she kept on trying to explain to me how to add a beneficiary. With no other option I started doing this on the mobile app and after the tedious task of filling in all the details on a stupid little screen I clicked next and the app closed on me. They decided that I was typing for too long and timeout the connection. HOW DO YOU TIME OUT WHILE THE USER IS TYPING!!!!!!! Will never recommend discovery bank.

Hey Anton

We appreciate your feedback, and apologise for the experience that you have had with us.

Due to security reasons our bank website does not allow payments to be made, all payments need to be done on your Discovery bank app and the recipient has to be added as a beneficiary has to be added for extra caution.

However we are available to assist with this process via our toll-free call center ***.

Kind regards,
Mpho

SERIOUSLY!!! Every single bank in South Africa, no, THE WORLD knows how to implement security to allow secure transactions via a web browser. And you are wrong. You DO NOT have to add a recipient as a beneficiary to make a payment on the app. WOW this just proves my statement re the clueless support. This is unbelievable.

Hi Anton

As advised we do not have the functionality on the website due to security reasons. To make a payment on the Discovery Bank app, you need add the recipients account details as a once off beneficiary.

Kind regards,
Mpho

Sorry, but I have to ask because only a stupid person would not wonder about this. Why is it that the whole banking world including all the big SA banks (Absa, FNB, STD) has managed to solve this 'security' problem many many years ago but Discovery cannot conclude a secure transaction in 2025? What is this 'security' reason? There is no need for technical details, just a layman's explanation. I want to share this feedback on social media channels so that people know it. If you elect not to share this mysterious reason I can share that as well ;)

Hi Anton

We appreciate your feedback, and for the inconvenience caused.

However, banking online imposes more risk on your bank profile, we would prefer bank details to not be compromised on the world wide web.

Should our security measures not be satisfactory to you, please do log a formal complaint at *** for further assistance.

Kind regards,
Mpho.

Say this out loud to yourself. You are claiming that there is a security risk difference between a) saving beneficiary details (which you allow) and b) not saving (which you claim is a higher risk).

You are also saying that using the mobile app does not use the 'World Wide Web' whereas the browser does. It is not the beneficiary details that impose a risk to me, it is MY baning details, which is used in both the browser and the app. If you responded with something that relates to communication protocols then there might be a debate but this is just stupid, to say the least. And also, you cannot provide a phone number or email address on Hellopeter since it will be reducted.
