Home affairs marriage horror.

We were given a date if the 21 October 2026 to sign for marriage. We got there with all that was required we were given forms to fill in as we did at just before signing, the marriage officer said No, she will not continue because she is not happy with the wording on the *** "non marriage certificate". We previously underwent the process with the immigration officer and there were no faults ever detected. All verifications were done there hence the date was being provided. We were then sent by the marriage officer lady to see the "supervisor" regarding the *** letter and she just said : " Well, we're not going to accept this letter, go change it to the wording we would use or go to a different home affairs office". We further got ahold of the ***, ***'s contact details (we reached out to them to no avail, phones just rang) and *** (Mr. Moodali) who sent us to speak to a woman named "Violet" who further refused to assist even hear what it was that we were sent to discuss with her. She was shouting in the middle of the office for us to tell her who gave us the office manager's number and who sent us to her. This was becoming something else from the main event being getting married with family having travelled to celebrate this to beginning verbally humiliated by the marriage officer and Violet in the middle of the home affairs with other clients watching like we were attempting something *******. It's rather disappointing that we are unable to receive services as tax paying citizens of ZAF and such behaviour at government offices go unpunished, the employees treat us in an ill manner because they know that nothing will happen to them giving bad service to the public.

FORMAL COMPLAINT REGARDING POOR SERVICE, EXCESSIVE DELAYS AND THE INCORRECT HANDOVER OF AN IDENTITY DOCUMENT AT ALEXANDRA HOME AFFAIRS BRANCH,

Date of incident: Monday, 26 October 2026 Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing to lodge a formal complaint regarding the unacceptable service, disorganisation, excessive delays and serious identity-document handling failure I experienced at the Alexandra Home Affairs branch in Wynberg on Monday, 26 October 2026. I arrived at approximately 09:30 after receiving an SMS notification informing me that my identity document was ready for collection. The notification indicated that my ID was ready on 22 October 2026. Despite having received this notification, I was made to wait outside in the scorching sun with other people who had come to collect their identity documents. We were only allowed into the waiting room at approximately 11:00. While inside, people were called forward very slowly. When I was attended to, I was informed that I needed to write my ID number on a piece of paper because the branch apparently now required an appointment or a list for ID collection. This requirement had not previously been communicated to me. A gentleman whom staff repeatedly called Matlala collected our handwritten ID numbers. On several occasions, he returned and asked us to provide or call out our ID numbers again so that he could rewrite them on another list. This happened repeatedly, yet the collection queue continued moving extremely slowly. We were given no clear explanation for the delays or the repeated recording of our details. At approximately 12:00, we were moved closer to the collection area, where we continued waiting. When I was eventually attended to, I was asked to produce my old ID document. Staff located my new ID in an envelope and informed me that my fingerprints would be verified before it could be handed over. However, despite having been present for hours and having provided my details repeatedly, I was later informed that my ID number had been incorrectly recorded on the handwritten list. As a result, staff could not locate my details on the system. I was extremely frustrated because I had personally written my ID number down three times. The error on the list was not mine, yet I was made to wait even longer while staff attempted to locate my document. I was again asked to show the SMS confirming that my ID was ready for collection. THE MOST SERIOUS INCIDENT: MY IDENTITY DOCUMENT WAS HANDED TO ANOTHER PERSON. While I was still waiting, I discovered that my ID document had been handed to another woman, whose surname was Ntuli. She had already left the branch and was on her way home in a taxi when she noticed that the ID number on the document did not match hers. Although the first six digits were the same because we shared the same date of birth, the remaining digits were different. She checked the document and realised that the surname was Mkhonza, not Ntuli. To her credit, this woman acted honestly and returned to the branch with my identity document. Had she not checked the document before continuing home, she could have unknowingly left with my ID while I remained at Home Affairs waiting for a document that had already been handed to somebody else. This could have resulted in serious complications, including the possibility of identity ***** or the misuse of my personal information. I observed that the staff member involved in handing over the document, whom I know as Dora, appeared to laugh about the mistake and offered a non-chalant "sorry". I was deeply concerned by what I perceived as a lack of seriousness regarding such a sensitive matter. My concern is not simply that a mistake occurred. It is that an identity document was handed to the wrong person without an effective final check to confirm that the document belonged to the person collecting it. I understand that mistakes can happen, but the procedures in place should prevent such an error from occurring. I also observed that the staff member seated next to Dora appeared to ask people to open their documents and check their details, whereas this check was not carried out when the document was handed to the woman who mistakenly received mine. This raises questions about whether the collection procedures are being applied consistently. After the incident, staff again had to record the other woman's ID number and search for her correct document. I was also concerned about whether the other people collecting IDs had received the correct documents, particularly where surnames were similar or where people shared the same date of birth. I eventually left Home Affairs at approximately 13:40, after waiting for more than four hours. At that time, I received an SMS stating that my ID had been collected, and my fingerprints were verified as part of the collection process. The entire experience was unacceptable. Members of the public should not have to endure hours of unexplained delays, repeatedly provide the same information because of administrative errors, or worry that their identity documents may be handed to strangers. In a country where identity ***** is a serious concern, an identity document must be treated with the utmost care. An error of this nature could potentially have devastating consequences for the person whose document is involved. I therefore request the following: 1. A formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incorrect handover of my identity document. 2. An investigation into the conduct and handling of the collection process by the staff members involved, including the individuals I know as Dora and Matlala. 3. An explanation of how my ID number was incorrectly recorded despite my having provided it repeatedly. 4. Clarification of the current ID collection procedures, including any appointment or list requirements, and why these requirements were not clearly communicated to members of the public. 5. An explanation of what fingerprint verification and document-checking procedures are supposed to take place before an ID is released to an applicant. 6. Confirmation of what measures will be implemented to prevent identity documents from being handed to the wrong people in future. 7. A written explanation and apology for the poor service, excessive delays and serious document-handling failure I experienced. 8. Confirmation that the incident has been formally recorded and that appropriate corrective action will be taken. I request that the department review any relevant collection records, handwritten lists, system entries relating to this incident. I also request that the department assess whether any additional security measures are necessary to protect our identity information following the incorrect handover. I am lodging this complaint because I believe members of the public deserve efficient, respectful and secure service when dealing with government departments. The protection of our identity documents should never be treated as a trivial matter. I trust that this complaint will receive the seriousness it deserves. Please provide me with a complaint reference number and a written response outlining the findings of your investigation and the action taken.

Excellent

The wait is a bit tedious especially if you’re one of the last with a ticket but once inside it is a different story. The lady in Photo Booth 1 was so switched on and professional as was the gentleman on counter 4 - was in and out in a flash. So good to see such a professional government department

No customer service or signage.

Completely customer-unfriendly. No signage or instructions, and no reception. I am an old man and expected to be told where to sit asare there were a number of places where one could sit. I had an appointment, but there was absolutely no one who I could tell this to. Very disappointed
