Frustrating School Application Process and Lack of Support from the Department of Education

As a parent navigating the school application process, I am deeply frustrated with the current system. Even when applications are successfully submitted, there is little transparency or communication regarding their status.

One of the most disheartening aspects is the prioritization of siblings for school placements. While I understand the importance of family unity, this policy often favours children from families who are clearly privileged, many of whom can afford to travel abroad for holidays. Meanwhile, other deserving children are left without a place. It feels like the system protects established connections rather than promoting fairness.

Adding to the frustration, the school went to verify my home address without making any prior appointment or notice. When the security guard said they didn’t know me, the school accepted this response without verifying whether the security guard was fami**** with me or even properly informed. This careless and superficial approach to address verification feels invasive and poorly managed, creating unnecessary barriers for parents.

What is most concerning is the apparent lack of support from the Department of Education. Many schools in suburban areas are gatekeeping, making it exceedingly difficult for parents to secure placements for their children. The department’s failure to address these issues leaves us feeling helpless and unheard.

This system is failing our children and families. We urgently need a fair, transparent, and supportive process that prioritises the needs of all students—not just those with connections and privilege.
