Coffee Machine: Poor Packaging and Questionable Provenance
The product was bought on Takealot, but it is challenging to say who the actual seller is if it is grey, off the back of a truck, etc. However, rectifying this will be up to the brand owner or import agent.
Here is my rejected review on Takealot because one can only review one's "experience." I could not experience the product because it looked tampered with, so there is no way to rate the buying experience. I must add that the return and refund processes are excellent but could have been avoided.
The review:
I had to return this product immediately upon receipt due to its unacceptable condition. The outer box was unsealed and exhibited significant wear, indicating rough handling. Upon inspection, the internal component boxes showed clear signs of being opened and repackaged multiple times. One of these boxes even had a scuffed photo on its black background—a clear indication of mishandling.
The coffee machine itself raised further concerns. The protective film was riddled with air bubbles as if it had been previously removed and then reapp****. This is far from factory-quality packaging, raising serious doubts about the product's journey since leaving the factory in February 2024. It strongly resembled a demo or display unit repurposed for sale. This level of carelessness is unacceptable for a high-end appliance priced at R16,000. If De’Longhi values its reputation, it must ensure its products reach customers in pristine condition, reflecting the premium price point. If old or display stock is sold, it should be transparently marked as such, perhaps discounted and placed in a clearance category. Simple measures like shrink-wrapping the box would reassure buyers that the product is fresh and quality-checked upon arrival in the country.
This is not an unreasonable expectation. This experience has significantly diminished my trust in De’Longhi's quality control and commitment to customer satisfaction. If this represents how their products are treated, it calls into question the value of purchasing from the brand altogether. Additionally, the seller's identity and seller ratings should be clearly displayed on the site. Simply listing a "brand name" is insufficient and may be of lesser value to online buyers. I would be genuinely surprised if De’Longhi directly handled this item.
On a positive note, I must commend Takealot for their excellent handling of the return and refund process, which was prompt and efficient. Their customer service in this regard deserves a five-star rating.
