Fridge freezes all contents, apparently it was made this way.

I have moved in to a new Estate that is furnished with Defy Appliances. I am having trouble with the fridge; on the lowest / warmest setting (1) the fridge completely freezes all the contents. I cannot keep anything in the fridge as it freezes over night. A technician (Theo) came over and had a look and told me that they made the fridges extra cold in Cape Town because 3 years ago there was a heat wave so they had to make them run colder in case there's another one...
