DebtBusters Blocking My Exit from Debt Review

Complaint: In January 2023, I signed up with DebtBusters for debt review when I was in financial difficulty. I was told I would save around R7,000 on my monthly repayments.

Since then, communication has been poor. The last proper update was mid-2023 when a Form 17.2 was sent to my creditors. In June 2025, I was informed that one of my creditors, Nimble, had refused the proposal, meaning the process was not finalised.

On 8 September 2025, I wrote to DebtBusters formally requesting to be removed from debt review because my financial position has improved significantly and I am now in a position to service all my debts directly. Instead of assisting me to exit, three days later on 11 September, DebtBusters suddenly pushed through a consent order application to my creditors — something they had failed to do for over two years.

I then requested a copy of the court order and a signed contract, but I was told no court order could be located on their system and the matter had to be “escalated.” This shows the process was never finalised, yet I remain flagged under debt review, which is stifling my career.

I find it unfair and unacceptable that DebtBusters only acted after I requested to leave, and are now forcing me into a process I no longer need. I am more than willing to pay any reasonable fees still due to DebtBusters, but I cannot accept being trapped under debt review when I am financially stable and able to settle my debts directly.

If this matter is not resolved urgently, I will be seeking relief from the National Credit Regulator (NCR).
