Terracotta vessels not worth the clay it's been moulded into

I purchased two "terracotta vessels" from the Coricraft TableBay branch. Both had contained soil and indoor plants. One of the vessels seems like it was cracked and stitched back together with clay whilst the second vessel is disintegrating completely. These terracotta vessels weren't fired and if they were, weren't fired properly as the clay can be sc****d off from the exterior without the use of any tools.

When I tried to return the defective vessels the manager initially stated these were vases and should not have had water in them. I stated that vases do in fact hold water. He then changed tack and said that it was a display unit and that it was "not waterproof" as per the sticker on the base of the item.

Clay by its very nature is not waterproof and this product was marketed as "terracotta vessels" which is a fired clay object, that is made from a porous clay. Contrary to what I was told, these vessels were also depicted holding plants on Coricraft's social media platform in various posts.

In my opinion, clay falling off a terracotta vessel when wet, is unacceptable and amounts to false advertising.

I have left both defective vessels in the store as I believe they are not worth the clay it's been moulded into. After a back and forth email exchange with the manager and customer care, I've been told that the "not waterproof" sticker absolves Coricraft.

At this point a block of clay would be more valuable to me, than the "terracotta vessels".

Dear Melvern G,

Thank you for sharing your concerns regarding the terracotta vessels. We’re sorry to hear about your experience and truly appreciate you bringing this to our attention.

Our terracotta vessels are designed primarily for decorative use, and as indicated by the "not waterproof" sticker on the base, they are not intended to hold water or moist soil directly. We’ve also noted that the vessels in our stores are displayed either empty or with dried foliage. That said, we understand how the promotional images may have contributed to the confusion, and we’ll review these to ensure clearer communication in the future.

While the modifications made to the vessels and the absence of a receipt mean we’re unable to process a return or refund, we’d like to offer you an in-store credit of R500 as a gesture of goodwill. We hope this will go some way toward making up for your disappointment and give you the opportunity to find something you’ll enjoy.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have further questions or need assistance with anything else. We value your feedback and hope to welcome you back to our store soon.

You’re welcome to contact us directly by emailing us at *** or calling us at 087 245 000

Yours in design,
Ruth
