Continental Tyres are quieter than their tyres

I recently experienced an unusual 'blow out' (straight line split from tread to rim) on a Crosscontact All terrain 265/65R17 tyre while travelling on a tarred but bumpy road.

No casualties thankfully but I have now sent 4 emails to Continental Tyres head office asking for someone to explain how this could have happened.

NO BLAME was laid at Continental Tyres but I need to know if this could possibly happen again? (I travel regularly).

I refuse to visit the local Port Alfred Continental store due to the Managers attitude so asked another tyre dealership for a hint of a problem.... 2 answers were offered - 1) a pothole but my three passengers agree with me that I had not hit a pothole just prior to the 'blow out' and 2) a tyre defect.
