Mecer Z140C Laptop woes
My mother (a pensioner) purchased a Mecer notebook from Computer Mania Centurion store in August 2020. Sometime after the computer began giving erratic "grey screens" at startup. The problem would always disappear after a hard boot directly after.
I took the notebook to CM and it was sent to Mecer (Mustek?). It came back some weeks later with a new screen. This obviously did not solve the problem, as I indicated that the grey screens were erratic and a broken screen would have shown this problem every time. Anyhow, in the store the problem resurfaced (no surprises there) and it was sent back to Mecer a second time.
It came back about 2 weeks later with (I kid you not) a software refresh. The problem is undoubtedly hardware related, but Mecer in their "wisdom" decided it was software related. Upon retest back at CM the problem showed its ugly face again. So back it went for a third time.
It came back some time later - apparently Mecer found a loose screen ribbon, which, they say, caused the problem. I would have thought that a loose ribbon would have led to the problem showing up each time the PC is powered on, but Mecer of course ignored the erratic nature of the problem.
The grey screens started again less than a week after being returned to my Mom. Upon returning the notebook to CM, I insisted on a new machine. At this point it was clear that Mecer had no idea what they were doing and had no intention of solving the problem. CM noted this.
Now, it seems, CMs Head Office have insisted that it GO BACK TO MECER A FOURTH TIME before they will be willing to replace the unit. This is attrociously bad service. At this point I am not sure if my Mom will ever have a working notebook again.
From a former loyal Computer Mania customer.
