Terrible company who break the law

I arrived in South Africa in August 2014 on a relative’s permit. I registered as an international student in South Africa in April 2015.

As all international students are required by law to have medical aid, I contacted CompCare in March 2015 to arrange cover. They wanted to start my cover on 1 March 2015 (which had already passed) however, as I had not yet registered as a student, we agreed to start the cover on April 1. This was the date I registered at NMMU and therefore I was never registered as a student in South Africa without medical cover. To clarify, I had cover with CompCare from 1 April 2015 to 31 March 2016 and the certificate to prove it.

In February 2016 I contacted CompCare to confirm I had medical cover whilst travelling around Southern Africa. They confirmed my medical aid covered this and provided me with a confirmation from their partner AIG.

In March 2016, I submitted a claim for a GP visit, which was covered by the scheme. I contacted CompCare who told me it was fine to submit this.

However they later told me I couldn't claim as I was no longer covered by them and my cover had expired at the end of February 2016! After querying this and providing the valid certificate they had given me, they claimed that they had changed my start date from April 1 2015 to March 1 2015 as I legally had to have had cover in March that year. As I wasn't a student this is not true. Moreover, even if I had needed cover in March, they had no right to assume this, especially without even consulting me.

One must ask, why would they have confirmed the travel cover up until 31 March 2016 if I was not covered by them during this time? And why had they not mentioned my medical aid had ‘expired’ when we discussed the travel cover or I told them I was submitting a claim?

I asked the CompCare employee I had been speaking to, Jennifer van Driel, to take the matter up with her supervisors. She informed me she had. However it's been over a month and despite two follow up emails from me to her, I have not had any response from her supervisors.

All I want is the money I'm entitled to from the claim
